Friday Fab Find

2010 February 5

I’ve been ‘Pouncing’ again today, and look who I’ve found.

White Liar by Kaelyn Michaels

Kaelyn only opened her Etsy shop on the 6th of January this year.
I love the look of her photos.

She says,
I love all things old! Especially old (and sometimes, ok most of the time, abandoned) buildings. It’s like stepping back in time.
If photography hadn’t struck my fancy back in 8th grade I probably would’ve majored in history.

Be sure and see more of her work at Kaelyn Michaels on Etsy and take advantage of her Grand Opening Special – FREE shipping in the US.

Magnifique Monday – Julie Blanchette

An heirloom felted doll

Julie says:

This is the first figure of a new Collection for 2010 entitled “Childhood”…

This child is heavily needled-felted on a wire core, (she is bendable), using Australian blue-green Merino wool for her body and hat and brown silk roving for her hair. For Teddy, I used coarser brown wool roving…

They are made to be an heirloom and will last for many years to come.

I have a good friend about to have her first baby – and this is an awfully tempting find…

To find this divine piece of work – and others like it – go to Julie Blanchette on Etsy

Quote Me – Rita Rudner

2010 January 28

My husband gave me a necklace.  It’s fake.  I requested fake.  Maybe I’m paranoid, but in this day and age, I don’t want something around my neck that’s worth more than my head.

~Rita Rudner

What is your opinion on fakes?

I’m not adverse to shopping in the discount stores.  Working to a budget means that some things need (and can) to be bought on the cheap.  Wrapping paper, coloured pencils, shampoo to use as hand-wash….

But when it comes to jewellery – well, that’s a different matter.

Once upon a time (in my poor, broke student days) a gorgeous necklace for 2 bucks was considered a find!

Now I pick them up and think about how poorly they are made, and how as a mass-produced product there’s no ‘unique-ness’ to the design.

But as a independent, handmade artisan valuing our work, and more importantly getting others to understand the value of handmade, is really difficult.

I’ve recently had a customer query ‘why’ a piece cost what it did.  I wasn’t offended (at all), but took the time to explain, and hopefully they will pass along that knowledge to someone they know.

An really interesting read on the subject of pricing and market pressure was highlighted recently at the Crafting an MBA blog.
Titled Etsy and the Culture of Cheap it provoked a lot of discussion and thought.  I’m hoping to source the book mentioned through our local library and have a read for myself.

So, back to fakes?

Would you wear a necklace that cost more than your head?

Magnifique Monday – Fairy Nana

2010 January 25

My beautiful girl is ‘too big’ (“I am almost 12, Mum!”)  to want to wear some of the gorgeous creations that can be found at Fairy Nana on Etsy.
Wish I had of found the Fairy Nana sooner….

The Woodland Fairy

I was nicknamed “Fairy Nana” by my eldest granddaughter, and I consider myself to be one of the luckiest people I know…able to fill my days with creating fairy outfits designed to make the people who wear them feel enchanting and magical.

And I love that a portion of the proceeds from this etsy shop benefits THE FAIRY NANA PROJECT – making Fairy Princess and Super Hero costumes for hospitalized children dealing with life threatening diseases.

Aussies on Etsy – Eve Drage Designs

2010 January 23

I came across Eve Drage Designs late last year, while Pouncing on Etsy shops.

The Kermit Sings A Rainbow Vest pictured below was the one I featured on my blog.

I approached Eve to go under the Spotlight, and she graciously agreed.

Bright and beautiful childs vest.

NAME: Eve Drage

AGE: 27

HOMETOWN: At the moment Mandurah, Western Australia; NZ born and bred.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF:

A diploma in Fine Arts in photography, from private NZ Arts school, Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design. Married an Aussie. Love Australia. Love all arts. Hobbies : gallery hopping, beach, dance, wineries, festivals.

1. WHAT TIME OF DAY ARE YOU AT YOUR CREATIVE BEST?:

Creative most in afternoon, but only can do my art in late evening/nights – if I’m not too tired from being be a fulltime mother of two little girl, Akasha (2 years old) and little boy Lazar (8 months old).

2. WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR INSPIRATION?  DO YOU HAVE ANY ‘RITUALS’ TO HELP PUT YOU IN THE CREATIVE STATE-OF-MIND?

I find inspiration from everything I see, hear, smell, taste, touch, think and feel.  It is my way of meditating, allowing myself and my senses to relax and be totally mindful in the processes.

I adore natural beauty and having beautiful things surround me.

No rituals, closing the door so I am totally alone in my own space.  Peace and quiet.  Being a mum this is WONDERFUL… hahahaha.

I do focus on the senses and the colours all seem to become brighter.

3. HOW DO YOU SQUEEZE CRAFTING IN TO YOUR BUSY LIFE?

Yes, squeezing art into my life is a bit of a struggle at the moment.

I am over flowing with ideas, I just don’t have the time to create them as of yet.  But this will all happen in due time.  I am a mother first and foremost.  The balance I strive for so I get my art fix daily, even if it is to research an artist or go to a gallery.  To keep on learning and drawing and writing down my ideas.  To keep art pulsing through my veins is important.

4. WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON AT THE MOMENT?

I am working on mandalas at the moment.  I adore Mandalas and find this fantastic for the meditative approach I am after in my art and putting an intent in all my works so I pass that love onto the observer.

Eve's Felted Energy Mandala

5. WHAT THREE TOOLS COULD YOU NOT LIVE WITHOUT?

My tools, MY MIND!

My hands!

My eyes!

Thank-you for this wonderful opportunity Tasha.  Exciting stuff!

Peace and light

Eve

Thanks for going under the Spotlight Eve!  I do love the colour and energy of your work :-)

Cheers,

Tasha
